Caregivers Can Help Elders Exercise and Get Healthy Fit

The most rewarding part of beginning a fitness routine is noticing the difference it makes in the rest of your life. Even if an elder begins exercising with a few simple stretches while seated or a short walk around the block, you’ll notice an improvement in how you feel as you go about your day.

Many elders reject exercise because they assume that they are too weak or frail to support a proper exercise regime. Nothing could be further from the truth! Exercise is possible for people of all ages, body types, and conditions.

When you're new to fitness at an older age, consider asking your live in caregiver to try these activities:

·  Window shop while walking laps at the mall
·  Get competitive while playing tennis
·  Take photographs on a nature hike
·  Meet new people at a yoga class
·  Watch a favorite movie while on the treadmill
·  Chat with a friend while walking, stretching, or strength training
·  Listen to music while lifting weights

Try Japanese Cooking for a healthy heart/ A-1 Home Care Encino

In terms of heart health, the Japanese soar above the rest of the world in their diets. Japan has the longest living population, with people of both sexes living into their nineties. It's no wonder that Japanese cuisine has taken hold in America due to it's pleasing palette and delicious healthy nature.

It is characteristic of Japanese cuisine to create a beautiful presentation. Use of multiple colors is encouraged, and fresh, beautiful ingredients are used to their best advantage. A-1 Home Care encourages our elderly clients to try eastern recipes out with their live in caregivers. We suggest the following recipe from www.bbcgoodfood.com.

MISO MARINATED SALMON

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp pale (shiro) miso paste
  • 2 tbsp mirin
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp saké (optional)
  • 2 x 100g salmon fillets

For the cucumber salad

  • half a cucumber
  • 2 tsp rice wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp vegetable oil
  • pinch caster sugar

Method

  1. Stir together the miso, mirin, sugar and sake, if using. Place the salmon fillets on a plate or in a medium food bag and cover with the miso marinade. Leave in the fridge for at least 30 mins or, better still, overnight.
  2. Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C/gas 6. Lightly oil a baking tray. Use kitchen paper to wipe off the marinade (don’t be tempted to wash idt off as you will lose some of the flavour). Place the fillets on the baking tray, skin side down. Cook in the oven for 15 mins until the fish flakes easily and is cooked through.
  3. Meanwhile, make the cucumber salad. Using a vegetable peeler, shave the cucumber into long, thin ribbons. Whisk together the rice wine vinegar, oil and sugar. Toss the cucumber ribbons in the dressing, then curl them up on two plates. Serve with the salmon and some plain white rice sprinkled with toasted sesame seeds.

Care tips after a masectomy or breast cancer surgery

After breast cancer surgery, your body needs more than its usual supply of protein. It needs it to repair cells, fight infection, and heal incisions. Right after surgery, boost your protein intake without worrying about calories. It will aid your healing and help you regain your strength. If you need to lose weight, you can focus on that after your post-op recovery.

Here are some ways to increase your protein intake:
  • Add protein powder or dry milk to meals.
  • Add grated cheese to vegetables, potatoes, rice, and salads.
  • Add high-protein snacks such as almonds, peanuts, and cheese

A-1 Home Care wishes you a Happy thanksgiving

Ready for a mini history lesson?

Thanksgiving is a holiday many of us love the most. It's a celebration of bounty, harvest, tradition, and best of all, food. However, many of us are unaware of the story behind the fourth thursday of November.

The people who comprised the Plymouth Colony were a group of English Protestants who wanted to break away from the Church of England. A ship carrying 101 men, women, and children spent 66 days traveling the Atlantic Ocean, intending to land where New York City is now located. Due to the windy conditions, the group had to cut their trip short and settle at what is now called Cape Cod. It was there that they settled and eventually broke bread in the first Thanksgiving.

Some info on the recent government shutdown

Most of you know that as of October 1st, a government shutdown is in effect. So what exactly does this mean for seniors in Encino?

Not all government functions will simply evaporate come Oct. 1 — Social Security checks will still get mailed, and veterans' hospitals will stay open. But many federal agencies will shut their doors and send their employees home, from the Environmental Protection Agency to hundreds of national parks. This causes reverberating effects as tourism, travel, jobs and lives take financial blows.

All government services have been split between the "essential" and "nonessential". Deemed essential include: Veterans Benefits, Disability Assistance, Social Security, and SSI. This means that elders and adults who depend on government checks to live from month to month need not worry, as those services fall under protected areas.

A-1 Home Care offers free counseling services for seniors who may qualify for benefits under the VA, such as Veterans Pension and Aid & Attendance Benefit. We help local elders navigate the maze that can be confusing forms, paperwork requests and the like. We look forward to talking with you!
